The two letters to Timothy and the letter to Titus are collectively called ‘pastoral letters’, which aptly identifies their unique character within the New Testament epistolary literature. While all other canonical letters (with the exception of the Epistle to Philemon, which is more private in character) are congregational letters that were intended to be read in the congregational assembly, we are dealing here with pastoral letters in which a leader writes to other leaders and addresses them directly in their pastoral function.
Thus, knowledge of these letters is central to learning pastoral leadership. This particular importance is to be taken into account with this course.
